The collective monograph "Elements of Hill Mari from the typological point of view" (the title in Russian: "Элементы горномарийского языка в типологическом освещении") has been published as a result of our field project. It is primarily focused on grammatical phenomena: semantics of nominal and verbal categories, morphosyntax of noun phrases and postpositional phrases, valency-changing operations, clause syntax, polypredication etc. The book also includes a sociolinguistic sketch and basic information on phonology. Some lexical domains are discussed as well. Text samples are provided.

Daria Mordashova (see handout in Russian) gave a talk on rotation verbs, comparing Hill Mari data with the existing typological background.

The talk by Anastasia Sibireva (see slides in Russian) was devoted to colour terms. Their investigation included both an experiment with colour chips and collocational analysis. A special focus was laid on colour terms for 'blue' – adjectives klovoj and simsə̈.

Ksenia Studenikina (see handout in Russian) discussed Hill Mari verbs referring to knocks and strokes within a broader research project on sound verbs. The observations made in the talk will be valuable for the study of how knocks and strokes can be categorized cross-linguistically, since their typology has not been investigated in much detail yet.

The talk by Vladimir Ivanov summarizes the author's cross-linguistic study of child words, i. e. words used only in the communication between adults and small children. They have some specific features as compared with the majority of the lexicon. Besides, such words show a considerable cross-linguistic consistency, therefore Hill Mari data were compared with the material from some other Finno-Ugric languages.

Finally, Maria Sidorova and Aigul Zakirova presented a talk on Moksha temperature adjectives. They analyzed this lexical group from a typological perspective with a special focus on their marking with the main Moksha diminutive suffix.

The 50th annual meeting of Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE 2017) took place in Zurich (Switzerland) from 10 till 13 September 2017. It brought together more than 600 participants, including our team members who gave 10 presentations.

Tanya Davidyuk (see abstract and poster) discussed the polysemy of the lative case and its contribution to the typology of case systems.

The talk by Irina Khomchenkova (see abstract and slides) dealt with discourse functions of the 3SG possessive markers. This phenomenon is well-known in Uralic studies, however Hill Mari data have some peculiarities which need to be accounted for.

Maria Sidorova (see abstract and handout) presented new data on number marking in quantified expressions and discussed possible ways of their syntactic analysis.

The presentation by Anastasia Gareyshina (see abstract) was devoted to the use of analytical verbal forms within conditional constructions.

Nikita Muravyev (see abstract and slides) analyzed one class of converbal constructions in Hill Mari and some other Finno-Ugric languages.

Three members of our team gave poster presentations at the International School TyLex held in HSE Voronovo campus from 2 till 8 September 2017.

Tanya Davidyuk (see poster) investigated semantic restrictions on the verbs allowing the lative case, which is the most peculiar among Hill Mari locative cases due to its polysemy and constructional properties.

The presentation by Polina Pleshak dealt with some morphosyntactic properties of Hill Mari kinship terms. She has shown that some features of possessive constructions and the use of the vocative affix -i depend in particular on whether a kinship term refers to the younger vs. to the older generation. Polina's poster is available here.

Maria Sidorova
discussed her findings on the lexical domains 'clean', 'dirty', 'transparent', 'turbid' in the Uralic and Altaic languages (the poster can be accessed here). The data from these languages (including Hill Mari) revealed several semantic oppositions not mentioned in the previous typological studies. Besides, it turns out that the lexemes in question are often "secondary" – in the sense that they are borrowed from other languages, or are morphologically derived, or developed these meanings as a result of semantic shifts.

The programme of TyLex included one more talk from our team: Aigul Zakirova presented a poster about mirative particles in the Turkic languages.

Some pictures (kindly shared with us by Matvey Kurzukov and Ekaterina Gerasimenko) can be viewed here.

The 3rd year students of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics defended their course papers on 6 June 2017. Among them were Maria Sidorova and Irina Khomchenkova, whose papers relied on Hill Mari field data.

Maria's research dealt with appoximate numeral phrases (cf. English about two hours, roughly 13 miles). Modern typology lacks their detailed description, therefore Hill Mari data (also compared to the material of some other Finno-Ugric languages) are highly valuable for typological studies. Besides, these data encourage the development of the syntactic theory, because the existing formal approaches encounter some challenges here and need some revision, which is discussed in this course paper.

Irina studied discourse functions of the 3SG possessive marker. This phenomenon had been widely discussed in Uralic linguistics, but the previous descriptions tend to be too vague and separated from the modern theory. Irina managed to clearly analyze her field data and to propose a semantic invariant for different uses of the 3SG possessive marker.

Both course papers got excellent grades. Some pictures from the defence can be viewed here.

On 1-2 June 2017 the University of Helsinki organized a conference on contact-driven multilingual practices. Our project was represented there by Irina Khomchenkova and Polina Pleshak, who prepared a co-authored talk.

Irina and Polina investigated those cases in which code-switching is marked by a contrastive affix. This fact suggests that a bilingual speaker has two parallel lexicons in their mind and chooses between them when selecting a word. The abstract and the slideshow are available at our website, together with some pictures from the conference.

A conference "Current issues in the dialectology of languages spoken in Russia" took place in Ufa (Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia) on 1-2 June 2017. Our representatives at this conference were Egor Kashkin and Vladimir Ivanov.

Egor discussed Hill Mari verbs of closing and their contribution to a typological project on this semantic domain. His handout and his article in the proceedings volume (both in Russian) can be found at our website.

Vladimir presented his study of ideophones in the Finno-Ugric languages of the Volga region (primarily Erzya, Moksha, Udmurt, and Meadow Mari). These lexemes were compared to their counterparts from the Turkic languages. The text of this paper can be accessed here (in Russian).

Our Gallery includes some pictures from this conference.

The bachelors of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics defended their theses on 29 May 2017. Three of them are our team members – Polina Pleshak, Daria Mordashova and Anastasia Sirotina.

Polina Pleshak's paper deals with the morpho-syntax of a NP in Moksha and Hill Mari and to a great extent relies on the data collected within our field project. The author thoroughly analyzed the properties of dependents in a NP in Hill Mari and proposed a theoretical account of her data. Besides, Polina managed to convincingly explain the variation of morpheme order in Hill Mari nominal paradigms.

The investigations of Daria Mordashova and Anastasia Sirotina focused on other linguistic issues they had worked on for several years. Daria discussed grammaticalization patterns of the verb *vilja in the Scandinavian languages, while Anastasia carried out her research on semantics, syntax and prosody of constructions with a colon.

All the three theses of our team members got excellent grades. The papers by Polina and Daria were recommended for publication. Some pictures from the defence are available here.

The 17th annual conference commemorating a Mari writer N. Ignatyev took place in the village of Paygusovo (Hill Mari district) on 28 May 2017. This conference traditionally brings together those working on Mari language, culture and history. This year one of the plenary speakers was Egor Kashkin, who gave a talk about the current results and further goals of our project. The slideshow is available here (in Russian). Some pictures can be viewed in the Gallery.

Four members of our team presented their talks at the section "Theoretical and Applied Linguistics" of the Science Day ("Lomonosov" conference) at the Faculty of Philology.

Maria Sidorova discussed Finno-Ugric approximate numeral phrases with a special emphasis laid on Hill Mari constructions with the lexeme närə̈. Whereas in both Uralic linguistics and typology approximate constructions have not been studied thoroughly enough, Hill Mari data contributes to the grammatical theory, as well as sheds light on some historical processes which influenced the synchronic language system. Maria's handout is available here (in Russian).

Ksenia Studenikina talked about how the noun 'head' is used in Russian, English, and German proverbs and what kinds of a semantic shift lie behind. These data were briefly compared with some published data of Meadow Mari.

The presentation by Daria Mordashova was devoted to how the verb 'will' is grammaticalized in Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, taking into consideration both its semantic shifts and constructional properties.

Anastasia Sirotina gave a talk on the prosodic properties of Russian constructions with colon. She carried out an experiment which highlighted some characteristics of intonation, tempo etc. in these constructions.

Ksenia, Daria, and Anastasia received letters of commendation from the Faculty of Philology. And Maria's paper was approved for publication in the selected proceedings volume.

Some pictures from this conference can be viewed in the Gallery.

Today Anastasia Sirotina gave a talk at the Student Conference of RSUH Institute for Linguistics. It was devoted to Hill Mari nominalizations on -mə̑ and -maš. These forms tend to remain underdescribed in traditional grammars. It turned out, however, that they differ sharply in their syntactic properties and in their process vs. resultative nature. This was the main point of the talk, supplemented with some distinctions between nominalizations in Hill Mari and in Meadow Mari (the latter having been previously described by N. Serdobolskaya et al.). The handout is available at our website (in Russian). And here one can view some pictures.
